NATIONAL POST
March 7th, 2001
Toronto's board of health intends to double the size
of the city's controversial restaurant rating system,
the board's chairman says.
The board will require all 18,000 establishments that
serve food in the city, from hotel restaurants to
hot-dog stands, to comply with Toronto's disclosures
program as soon as possible, said Joe Mihevc, chairman
of the board.
The city currently requires 9,000 restaurants to post
green, yellow and red notices showing whether they
have passed, conditionally passed or failed public
health inspections.
Another 9,000 establishments - including hospitals,
school cafeterias, take-out eateries, catering trucks,
grocery stores and old-age hones - are inspected but
not compelled to post results.
"We'll be expanding," Mr. Mihevc said. "We are asking
our solicitors to find ways and means to require the
other 9,000 establishments to comply."
